SAVE TIME, MONEY AND LIVE A SIMPLER LIFE WITH TOY ROTATION!
I have said it time and time again- toy rotation has saved my sanity! I started to rotate toys for my boys 7 years ago ! Throw in a third boy and moving to a smaller house into the mix, I still continue to rotate their toys to this day!
You might have heard the term toy rotation system or similar in regards to Montessori learning. Now, we're not a Montessori family but I do follow some of their principles. I do consider myself a minimalist, so toy rotation is great for our family.
I think most Mum’s can relate to this scenario: Child empties toy box all over the floor plays with one thing for 5 mins or maybe nothing at all! Child calls “Mum, I’m bored, I’m hungry” or just hangs off your leg wanting you to play with them. As if the lady standing at the sink full of dirty dishes is where you go to have a great time!
To make matters worse it’s only months after they have received their birthday toys and Christmas is still 6 months away! So what is toy rotation and why should one do it?
Toy rotation is the simple action of putting out a portion of your child's toys that have been sorted by categories and then rotating them according to a schedule or plan. It is one of the easiest ways to deal with toy overload and your pre-schooler becoming bored.
“An avalanche of toys invites emotional disconnect and a sense of overwhelm". says Dr. Kim John Payne and hey if a Doctor says it, it must be true!
8 great reasons why a Toy rotation system is the bee's knees!
- Inventiveness and fantasy blooms as they discover a new way to engage with an old toy. This is a big 'Why' in the Montessori learning approach.
- Clean up time becomes a breeze. This is especially a plus for the minimalist Mum!
- Less toys out equals more and deeper engagement. Over stimulation is easier to avoid.
- Children’s brains are programmed to absorb everything they hear, see, taste, touch, etc… However, if they keep touching the same textures and seeing the same toys, in the same place, they lose interest.
- Everyday objects are reinvented and turned into toys.
- It develops independence as children learn to play on their own. What Mum wouldn't give a high five to that!
- You are better prepared for birthdays and Christmas as you notice more easily what toys are broken, not being played with and what gaps there may be in different toy categories.
- MUM DOESN'T GO CRAZY WITH TOYS THROWN AROUND THE HOUSE EVERYWHERE!!!
